..:: Cosplay Skin Colour ::.. by DemyDee ..:: Cosplay Skin Colour ::.. by DemyDee
Okay, I KNOW I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care.

Okay. This is a touchy subject with me and also a very valid topic.

Cosplay has nothing to do with skin colour.

Cosplay is about dressing up and having fun as a particular cartoon/videogame/anime/whatever character.

Why should someone not be able to cosplay as a character because of their skin colour? Why should people look at someone weird because they don't match the same skin colour as the character?

Sorry, but 90% of fucking characters are made with pale skin. Whoopsie daisy, we're not all fucking pale.

I get tired of hearing that someone shouldn't be able to cosplay whatever character because they're black or spanish, or whatever race that isn't "white".

Well, you know what? FUCK YOU! Cos if THAT's the fucking case, white people shouldn't be able to cosplay as most of the anime characters out there. Wanna know why? because they're Asian.

So I don't wanna hear that shit. Fuck that.

*huff huff*

Feel free to use.

I thought of cosplaying killer Bee as part of my college spirit week once I get into college and I am white. So what if I'm white? If I want to cosplay killer bee I should be allowed to do so.

I agree 1000% ^^
I hate when people talk about skin color in EVERYTHING!
and if it's not about about sex appeal...

I've been in a situation where some random stranger made me cry the "dealer's room" because I was flatter than the character I was cosplaying...excuse me for not having overly huge breast on my small body I was born with...

some people are just super insensitive...

I am white and I hope to cosplay nick fury even though fury is black instead of white, like my own skin color.

We'll this helped me because I always wanted to go to japan and wear some cosplay outfits and to be honest with you I go crazy for japan lol

But thx tho
Urexill Featured By Owner Feb 8, 2014  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I don't think the skin colour or weight is important.

I mean my belly isn't super flat but it's still dangerously flat. :3

I hate it when people think you need to be skinny skinny to be able to cosplay.

I mean you don't need to be so fat you need to sit in a wheel chair xD

But yeah!

Yes! Thank you! I haven't cosplayed yet, but I will one day and I have tan skin because I'm half black half white.

Hallelujah to this post!
I'm Filipino too and I've always been self conscious about my skin color when planning a cosplay...
like, "Shit, should I cosplay as Hatsune Miku...? ... Nah, she's too white."
Glad other people can relate to my problems... I've spent ours looking up anime / cartoon characters I could cosplay as but no one's really made a prolific "tan" or "brown" anime character before... Except for some characters from the "Avatar" or "Legend of Korra" series, but I don't think that's really considered anime...
Anyway, thanks for making a stamp like this! XD

I get the thought of this, but knowing that my olive skin will forever make me unable to properly cosplay pale characters does make me sad :(

This is an impopular opinion and maybe so much of yours will hate me for this but...
If you're talking about cosplay as a play, as a game, there's no rules! You put that cosplay in the con and you have a good time.

But, as a milk-pale-fucking-skin and lover of dark/tan skin characters, when I do cosplay for a contest or a photoshoot, something more professional and "serious", I must put a lot of dark make up at my skin and my face. Why? Because I want to be the most acurate to the character I love. And if I have the pale skin and the character not, I would make up for her/him.
I think that people who has tan or dark skin should do the same in a contest or a serious cosplay, I MEAN, THEY SHOULD! I'm not saying that they can't go of her/his favourite character because this character has a different color skin. But as a lot of cosplayers darken their skin for fit the costume, that would be right lighten the skin for that kind of characters.

Please, don't consider this as an ofense or an attack, but this is my opinion at this topic >_<
DemyDee Featured By Owner Dec 1, 2012  Student Digital Artist
It's not offensive. If you're going for a photoshoot or competition is one thing, but I'm talking about for fun. Some people are so serious about it that they bash people who are doing this not for recognition or popularity. A simple 'I want to dress up as this character because (s)he is my favourite!' should not be looked down upon just because someone's skin colour doesn't match the cosplay.
REQ-Inferno Featured By Owner Dec 2, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Then, I'm agree with you, no one can say to someone "don't make fun dressing as your favourite character because you haven't his/her appareance". That's awfull and that kind of people deserves a kick in the face.

I almost agreed with you until I read the description.

Asians are actually the most vile and racist towards cosplayers, not white people.

I agree! This needed to be said :) I have a friend who is dark skinned and Filipino, but she cosplays an amazing Black Rock Shooter and Stocking :D
This is also a big help to me, I'm going to be doing my first cosplays for Comic Con and I tan really easily... So I was worried I would be too tan. So thank you for this :)

You really think someone can pull it off even if their skin is near caramel in color? I am really glad I found this stamp, it helps the desire to cosplay and assuages the fear of being flamed for various things. Thanks for making it. :)

If you're doing something just for fun then yeah, it like shouldn't matter lol
but like you want to cosplay seriously (or model, if that's a better word for it?) then shouldn't (a suggestion, not a must) probably cosplay as the character if not their ethnity (and it's obvious, where you could tell). It'd be like drawing a character with red hair when they have black hair xD
otherwise props to the stamp! Some people are just killjoys, augh.
DemyDee Featured By Owner Feb 29, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Yeah, I understand where you're coming from.

If you're doing it for modeling, then yes, it might be better if you match the character, but still, there is no reason people should get flamed or hated on for cosplaying if they don't match the character. You didn't choose to be born the colour you are and it's not your fault that most of the anime characters have fair skin. ; 3 ;

I want to cosplay sebastian but alas ;A; my fathers side of the family is from southern europe. like right on the ocean so i have tannish skin

Why did I forget to comment otl.

I really, really, REALLY love this stamp. I'm Ethiopian and I've been too nervous to cosplay some characters i'm really in to, like Prussia, America, Edward Elric, Daniel from Amnesia: the Dark Descent, ect. Since i'm so self conscious that someone would lose their shit because i'm not the right skin colour, I've always avoided cosplaying period, but then again I do have a Spain cosplay and I still get nervous to go out to another convention in it since I doubt many people recognized me other than 3-5 people.
But seeing that my friends are cheering me on and finding this stamp boosts up my self-esteem, and I thank you for making this ;w;
DemyDee Featured By Owner Feb 9, 2012  Student Digital Artist
You're welcome! And who cares if you aren't the same skin tone? It shouldn't stop you from dressing up anyway.

I mean, the whole point of cosplay is to have fun, right?

I bet you'd look great in any cosplay you want to do! Go for it! I believe you can do it just fine! Just have fun and be whomever you want to be! ♥♥♥

Good luck!
T3chnoTurtl3z Featured By Owner Feb 12, 2012
Yeah! And it is only costume play from what I've seen in the name cos and play, so it shouldn't be too much of a big deal even if you don't look alike.

But really, thank you so much. ;w;

See, I cosplay as Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games sometimes, who is supposed to have olive skin but I'm too pale to be considered that. It's not as drastic a difference as some other cosplays and characters, but it's still a small difference.

Cosplaying is a matter of having fun. Let's not fight, I love this stamp!
Japan-16 Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2012
Thank you so much! I had that problem with someone who was my "friend" (term use lightly), an she like to talk behind my back and told my bestie that I won't be a good cosplayer because i'm black. And this just made my day, so thank you. If you don't mind I'm going to copy this on face book and put a link to your page.
DemyDee Featured By Owner Jan 15, 2012  Student Digital Artist
It's no problem at all! Thank you so much! I think that it's very wrong to discriminate due to skin colour and besides, cosplay is just for fun, but you know there will always be stupid critics. I'm glad this spoke out to someone. c: ♥
